Golden Rules for Use
Before Using the Reward Board
- Decide as a family what behaviour you are addressing eg improving table manners, tidiness, potty training etc. It is important that you are clear about what you are rewarding
- If there are a range of behaviours that you need to work on then you need to decide which one will be easiest to modify, always begin with the easiest first. And only deal with one behaviour type at a time.
- Set a small and achievable target to aim for example to sit at the table for the start of meals 3 out of 5 times. Your ultimate aim being to sit at the table for meals all the time!
- If possible allow your child to have an input into choosing their own Reward Board.
- Show your child the Reward Board and explain how it works
- You may wish to offer your child an extra incentive to fill the board, for example once they have a full board they get to choose a favourite activity, a new comic or whatever else they are motivated by.
- Put the Reward Board on display somewhere where your child can see it, to give them a visual reminder.
Using the Reward Board
- NEVER take a sticker away from your child’s board. Reward Boards are a positive behaviour management strategy, taking stickers away is negative!
- Ensure that everybody is rewarding your child consistently eg grandparents, childminder etc.
- Use lots of verbal praise and stay positive
- Make it clear what you are rewarding “Well done, you did a wee on your potty, I’m putting a sticker on your Reward Board” It is important that your child associates the behaviour with the positive reward.
- Celebrate every achievement – lots of clapping, looking at the Reward Board and seeing how many more stickers are need to fill it etc
- Make gaining a sticker easy at first, your child needs to see how much fun using a chart can be. It may be that you reward sitting on the potty initially rather than actually using the potty. Targets can be made harder as time goes by.
- If the chart doesn’t seem to be working, rethink the targets that you have set, remember, targets should be small and achievable.
- Be a good role model for your child. For example if you are working on them not shouting, be aware of your own voice levels!
- Never try to bribe your child using the Reward Board.
- If you have concerns regarding your child’s behaviour please consult a professional such as a GP, teacher or health visitor
